The Creative Process: How we design our watches

Ever wonder how we come up with our latest designs, what inspires our watch names or simply are curious as to what goes into each watch style?

We're giving you an exclusive look into the creative process of the Tense team.

How does the process of starting a new design begin?

It all begins in observation and collecting ideas/inspirations. It is important to collect information on what is on trend, followed by questions like "who will wear this style?", "what has been missing from our collections?" and "how can I elevate an existing design or build off it to start a new style?"

Do you like to hand draw your designs or use the computer?

Usually we start with hand sketches, and use CAD software to finalize the drawing.

How do you come up with the colour combinations?

We spend quite a bit of time experimenting with different color combinations, then getting feedback from friends, family and the rest of the Tense team. Having a Pantone color palette on hand is great to assist with getting the perfect colour.

How do you come up with the names for a collection?

They are inspired by the Canadian Outdoors and the connection of our brand to its' Canadian Heritage.

What is the most surprising element of coming up with new designs?

The time it takes to actually start the process. Once you have a vision, it is easier to continue on, but coming up with the first sketch or overall idea can be the hardest part of all.

What styles are you most proud of? And why?

The Hudson. This is our very first model that showcased us stepping out of our traditional design of all wood watches, and has proven to be one of the most successful in our Hybrid line.
